Drayton Hall, in partnership with the Charleston Library Society, was delighted to host a sold-out lecture, Inside Delftware, marking a memorable beginning to The Charleston Show Weekend.
The evening brought together scholars, collectors, artists, and enthusiasts for a lively, behind-the-scenes conversation that explored the rich—and often overlooked—history of Delftware. Guests were treated to an engaging dialogue between author and distinguished decorative-arts advisor Genevieve Wheeler Brown and acclaimed ceramic artist Michelle Erickson, whose combined perspectives offered both historical depth and contemporary insight.
The conversation was inspired by Genevieve Wheeler Brown’s recent book, Beyond Blue and White: The Hidden History of Delftware and the Women Behind the Iconic Ceramic, which challenges long-held narratives surrounding Delftware production. Through thoughtful discussion, Brown and Erickson illuminated the critical roles women played in shaping this iconic ceramic tradition—stories that have too often gone untold.
From the evolution of Delftware techniques to the social and cultural contexts in which these objects were made, the lecture offered attendees a deeper understanding of how decorative arts reflect broader histories of labor, creativity, and resilience. Erickson’s perspective as a practicing ceramic artist added a compelling, hands-on dimension, bridging past and present through material knowledge and artistic practice.
The energy in the room reflected a shared enthusiasm for discovery, scholarship, and meaningful conversation—setting the perfect tone for the days ahead. As the opening event of The Charleston Show Weekend, Inside Delftware underscored the value of bringing together history, artistry, and community in a setting as storied as Drayton Hall.
We extend our sincere thanks to Genevieve Wheeler Brown and Michelle Erickson for their generosity, insight, and engaging storytelling, and to all who joined us for this special evening. We look forward to continuing the celebration of art, history, and craftsmanship throughout The Charleston Show Weekend, March 19–22, beginning with the much-anticipated Preview Party at Drayton Hall.
