Drayton Hall Preservation Trust has been awarded the 2024 Prize for Excellence and Innovation from The Decorative Arts Trust. This award will help fund the conservation of the Great Hall plaster ceiling, the investigation of the plaster ceiling in the Drawing Room, and digital and in-person access to these spaces during and after this preservation project.
The Great Hall is located on the lower level of Drayton Hall – a memorable entrance to the house, is twelve feet high and is decorated with cast plaster elements. The current ceiling is the third plaster ceiling installed in the Lower Great Hall, the design likely dates to the 1880’s. Severe deflection in the floor joins above has been an ongoing issue, and has undergone several repair and preservation projects.
The Drawing Room, situated on the southeast corner of Drayton Hall also boasts a twelve foot high ceiling. The original hand-carved plaster ceiling in the Drawing Room is thought to be the oldest of its kind to survive in North America.
