charlestons best christmas and thanksgiving events 2021

We are pleased to announce a full holiday season of events has returned to Drayton Hall in Charleston, SC for 2021! Drayton Hall c. 1738 is the oldest unrestored plantation house open to the public for tours and the museum also boasts three world-class museum galleries and an incredible event pavilion. Across the active 125-acre site, the 2021 Thanksgiving and Christmas season will offer an event for every visitor to Charleston. This year on Friday and Saturday evenings from Thanksgiving to Christmas, Drayton Hall hosts Candlelight Tours of the main house – a most incredible and exciting holiday experience in the unmodernized 1750 estate home.

In 2021 Drayton Hall’s legendary Oyster Roast returns on December 5, 2021 at 2:30 pm rain or shine, also! If you are considering attending, we encourage you to by your tickets now – as I write it is September 30th and the tables are already sold out for this December event. We get many phone calls each year on the day of the event asking if we can accommodate more guests; we wish we could but, this event is sold out months in advance for good reason. The food and music are great! In 2021, The Bluestone Ramblers will play while the guests enjoy oysters and all the fixings along with chili and local beer! Click here to get your tickets!

Guests who enjoy both history and music should plan to attend Drayton Hall’s 38th Annual African American Spirituals Concert to be held on December 12, 2021. This rousing and beautiful concert offered by Ann Caldwell and The Magnolia Singers revisits the historic spiritual music of the Lowcountry’s Gullah Culture. If you wish to learn more about this tradition, The Shop at Drayton Hall offers a remarkable book on spirituals and the origins of the music, Gullah Spirituals: The Sound of Freedom and Protest in the South Carolina Sea Island by Eric Shawn Crawford Ph. D. Dr. Crawford will also speak virtually as part of the Drayton Hall Book Club Series on December 16, 2021 at 5:30 pm. This talk will be broadcast on Zoom and is a Donate What You Can event. Register by clicking here. Attend both if you’re able! This book is also available tax-free and with free shipping from The Shop at Drayton Hall when you use checkout code DHBOOKCLUB.
