During Drayton Hall’s Brown Bag Lunch Series today, two educators from Ashley Hall School for Girls presented a newly developed and implemented education program. Social Studies teacher Melanie Gibson and Art teacher Carol Wellein, both of Ashley Hall School For Girls, developed the cross-curricular program, Partners in Curriculum: Living the Past Through Art. Inspired, in part, by Drayton education programs the goal for Gibson and Wellein was to make a “real world connection” for their students linking historic sites to art and history.
The 2009-2010 school year marked the second year that Ashley Hall fourth grade students visited Drayton Hall three separate times where they participated in Dig This! Excavating History, Artisans and Apprentices, and The American Revolution: War Comes to Drayton Hall. Both on-site and in school, students created art projects inspired by architecture, historic occupations, and traditional art forms. Community partnerships are integral to the mission of Drayton Hall and we greatly appreciate the support and enthusiasm of teachers Melanie Gibson, Carol Wellein, and the students of Ashley Hall. We are thrilled to be a part of such an innovative local program and are looking forward to the return of the Ashley Hall students to Drayton Hall for the 2010-2011 school year!
