Beyond the Bookshelf: A Deep Dive into the Drayton Hall Library

September 24, 2026

This listing from Charles Drayton’s journal is likely an inventory of his father John Drayton’s library.

What does a collection of books tell us about the people who owned them? At Drayton Hall: quite a lot. The Drayton family library, with more than 440 titles including history, geography, agriculture, natural philosophy, religion, and mathematics, reflected the intellectual world of John and Charles Drayton and their engagement with Enlightenment ideals.

Charles didn’t just own these books. He knew them, quoted them, and referenced them extensively in his own writings.

Join Curator of Education and Museum Programs Amber Satterthwaite for a deep dive into the Drayton library as a primary source—not a list of books, but a portrait of the men who read them.
