"Mystery at Drayton Hall" - Antiques Magazine Article, Summer 2010
Drayton Hall is in The Magazine Antiques, Summer 2010 issue, with "Mystery at Drayton Hall: The Surprise Appearance of a 1765 Watercolor Sheds New Light on a Palladian Past" (pages 148 through 151).
Co-written by George McDaniel, executive director of Drayton Hall, and Carter Hudgins, Director of Preservation at Drayton Hall, the article describes the detective work that went into discovering the owner and provenance of a mystery watercolor sent to Drayton Hall anonymously in 2007. Through its authentication, the watercolor would eventually shed new light on the original design of Drayton Hall and its landscape.
The article makes the point that research is never complete at historic sites. New discoveries are being made nearly every day at Drayton Hall, as artifacts are unearthed, the dirt of centuries is washed from thousands of archaeological fragments that emerge with their own stories to tell, or as research results in new understanding and interpretation of the site.
