Description:
The classic fanner baskets are crafted by Senegalese women from a local field grass called "ndone," which grows about a hundred kilometers south of Senegal's capital, Dakar. On plantations throughout the Lowcountry, enslaved African Americans used baskets like these to winnow the husks from rice. The shipment from Senegal also includes deeper baskets interwoven with bright, vibrant strips of color. Because the baskets are handmade, there are slight variations in size and color. The deeper baskets are available for purchase at Drayton Hall's onsite Museum Shop. |
